Ontario Fastpitch 2009 Rankings

These are the July 15 rankings for the 2009 season. The final rankings for the Tier 1 teams were done on July 1 and now these are the final Tier 2 rankings for the season. Thank you to all of the coaches who participated. We will be doing a synopsis of the results and the effectiveness of this ranking system later this month and we will be engaging in an open dialogue on how this can be implemented into the PWSA seeding for future tournaments.

All Tier 1 teams are ranked and the top 16 Tier 2 teams are ranked, with the remaining teams listed in alphabetical order.

Enjoy the rankings for what they are, have fun, and best of luck to all teams in the Qualifiers and Grand Championships.

  • Create fun and interest in the sport
  • Find accurate rankings for possible seeding in playoff tournaments
  • Determine future earned division placement, Tier 1, 2, 3

Premise

  • Midget, Bantam, Novice only
  • Junior included if support can be gained
  • Mite, Squirt not enough teams and unreliable support but may be included in the future
  • Will rank all Tier 1 and top 16 in Tier 2

System

  • Establish preliminary lists in March/April and send to coaches for initial ranking as a starting point
  • Each week or two the previous week's ranking list (along with a complete list of teams in that division) is sent to coaches/rankers on a Monday by email
  • Teams are simply ranked 1-16, by placing a number beside each name, and returned by email

Rankings

  • Weekly results are achieved by adding each team's individual ranking from each return and then it is divided by the number of rankers. (i.e. - the lowest number is ranked #1 and so on down the list)
  • Each team's average will slot them appropriately in the weekly rankings
  • The system of average ranking by a broad range of coaches/rankers allows for the closest we can get to fairness and accuracy
  • Coaches will rank teams within the division and Tier that they are playing
  • Rankings may be changed to Tiers near or after the declarations are completed for the sake of comparison

Note: It is our view that all teams have the right to their own reasons for declaring Tier 1 or 2. These rankings are not intended to criticize or judge those teams that appear to play above or below their apparent abilities. These reasons can simply be geographic, the age of the team, teams unsure of how good they may be, or just wishing to play a longer season and have fun, and all are valid reasons. While competition is important to play to the best of a team's abilities ultimately the fun and enjoyment derived from the sport is of paramount importance.
