Mark Smth Stays as National Team Head Coach

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by OntFast Monday, 05 October 2009 18:17

(Ottawa, ON) – Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Senior Women’s National Team Head Coach Mark Smith’s (Falmouth, NS) contract with the team has been extended for two years, until the end of the 2011 Pan American Games. In 2009, Smith coached both the Senior Men’s and Women’s National Teams, leading the Men’s team to a Bronze medal at the ISF Men’s World Championship. He also led the Women’s team to a Bronze medal at the KFC World Cup of Softball and Silver medals at both the Canada Cup and the Pan American Championship.

Smith coached the Senior Men’s National Team from 2001 to 2009, and led the team to a Pan American Games Gold medal in 2003, an ISF World Championship Silver medal in 2004 and an ISF World Championship Bronze medal in 2009. He will be stepping aside from that position and a new Head Coach will be put in place for 2010.

“I am excited about this new opportunity and anxious to get started” stated Mark Smith. “Our women’s program has demonstrated we are among the top softball programs in the world.  2010 is an important year as we prepare for the World Championships and I am looking forward to this challenge.”

The Senior Women’s National Team will have an important season in 2010, as they will be in the hunt for their first ISF Women’s World Championship medal since 1978 (Silver). At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the team narrowly missed an opportunity to bring home a medal with the youngest team at the event, and is considered a medal threat for the ISF World Championship, which will be held in Oklahoma City, OK from July 16-26, 2010. Team Canada will also participate in the 17th Annual Canada Cup, which will take place from July 3-11, 2010.

Tough Weekend for Gee Gees

PDFPrintE-mail

Written by OntFast Monday, 05 October 2009 18:26

The first of a series of long road trips went underway this weekend, as the Ottawa Gee-Gees fastpitch team travelled a few hours south to play against the York Lions, the McMaster Marauders and Brock University. The weather was unkind for fastball players this weekend, raining out the games against York on Friday night. The Gee-Gees went on to Mohawk Sports Park in Hamilton to face a defensively strong McMaster team. A few uncharacteristic offensive and defensive plays made it very difficult for the Ottawa Gee-Gees to come back from McMaster's 2-0 lead. The Gee-Gees could not recover and fell to a 3-0 loss. With a rejuvenated spirit, the Gee-Gees recovered much lost ground in the second game, with some great timely hits from rookies Jenna Flannigan, Kristen Barber and Stephanie Samms, leaving the Gee-Gees 6-4 in the fourth inning. Unfortunately, the weather again took a turn for the worse, with hail and then heavy rain, resulting in the game being called by the umpires.

The Gee-Gees then went on to play Brock University on Sunday afternoon. The first game proved to be a game between the pitchers and tough defence, leaving it scoreless until the 6th inning, where rookie, Brittany Shank pinch ran for 5th year veteran Elissa Sivel on second base and rookie, Kristen Barber took to first with a walk. Second year veteran, Mallory Watson drove in the RBI, with the Gee-Gees winning 1-0. The second game proved to be a game of frustration, with the Gee-Gees struggling to come back from a 6-0 Brock University lead. A short rally brought the Gee-Gees four runs, but this was not enough to take the lead.

The Gee-Gees will look to secure their 100th win at the National University Championships this week at Waterloo.

st clair college 2009 ocaa champs

The St. Clair College Women’s Fastball team won their second consecutive OCAA Provincial Championship Saturday in Hamilton with a stunning upset of top seed Durham in the final. St. Clair relegated to the losers bracket after Day 1 defeated Seneca 5-1 before upending Durham 4-2 and 8-7 in dramatic fashion to claim their third Gold Medal in the program’s eight year history. St. Clair duplicated the same feat from year ago when they needed to defeat Durham twice in the Gold Medal final in the double knock-out format. This time the Saints accomplished it with a rookie laden line-up that included 11 new players on the roster from a year ago.

candice gatecliffe In the Saturday morning Semi-final Candice Gatecliffe (Merlin) took the ball on the mound throwing a complete game 5-hitter to help the Saints advance to the Gold Medal final. Keri Bagley (Windsor-Assumption) had a pair of hits and an RBI to lead St. Clair at the plate. Jennifer Gilroy earned Player of the Game honours with outstanding defence behind the plate to go with an RBI hit.

Gatecliffe then pitched another complete game against Durham and did not allow an earned run spreading out 6 hits to take her 3rd win of the tournament and the Player of the Game Award. She also had a pair of hits to help the Saints offensively. Trisha Whaley (Chatham) had a single and a triple while Samantha Newton (Windsor-Catholic Central) had 2 doubles to go with 2 RBI’s.

t whaley Capping an unbelievable comeback Gatecliffe pitched the Saints to the Championship with another complete game. This time she did just enough in holding the powerful Durham line-up down while the offense carried the day. St. Clair pounded out 13 hits as a team with Newton, Whaley and Gilroy leading the way with 3 hits apiece. Newton had 2 RBI’s while Gilroy had 3 RBI’s as St. Clair scored 3 runs in the 6th inning after trailing for most of the game.

Gatecliffe was decorated with the OCAA Championship Top Pitcher Award going 4-0 on the mound over 28 innings with a stingy 2.25 ERA. Newton was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player batting 0.533 and led the team with 5 RBI’s over the weekend.
